Gross Gott Everyone:
Haven't read anyone in a while, so here is a quiz for you all:
I was researching in the Congressional Reading Room of the Library of Congress and came across this book entitled "In the Shadow of the Hofburg". This books deals with all of the scandals/events associated with the Hofburg in the past 200 years.
The book mentions the Hofburg cellar/basement which holds the original statutes on the top of the Hofburg (the ones current there now are copies).
The book also mentions the lingerie shop on the Kohlmarkt called the "White Cat" from which Marie Vetsera left Wien and never returned.
Anyone heard of these two Viennese tales/stores and are they true?
The book is out of print now here in the US, but may be available in Wien.
All the best to everyone.

I'm sorry Susan ... I'm unaware of these stories or the book. But they do sound interesting.
However I came across a book: The history of the Austrian Dirndl (or something like that) written by an old Austrian lady describing Austrian haute couture of the country side quite nicely. She also includes her family history and interestingly enough some of the family pictures show her family with Klimt. They seem to have known each other...
well I'm sure there is more treasures out there - if only I had more time to look for them :-)
All the best to you all
Barbara.
Hello Barbara and Everyone Else:
Thanks for responding. Vienna seems to be a city with many mysterious.
I would love to see this lady's book, look at the photos since I cant read German.
Klimt spent a lot of time at the Attersee lake with E. Fluge'parents. Her family's house is still standing there. She lived in the 3rd District but spent the WWII years at her House in the Attersee. G. Klimt left her all his papers and pictures in his will so maybe that his how this lady knew him.
Have a cool evening in Wien

Who knows what is lurking in the bowels of the Hofburg. Never heard about the statues but there used to be a tunnel between the Hofburg and Demel's. Unfortunately, it was used by thiefs in an attempt to burrow into the bank at the top of Kohlmarkt and sealed up thereafter.
Duncan
Hey Duncan and Barbara,
thanks for your updates.
I heard about this tunnel from Demels to the Hofburg.
Also, heard about the former owner of Demels who had ran some type of gambling operating from the top floor of Demels in the 80's or 90's.
Never knew that Demels had so much nefarious (sp) things happen there other than the law suit and who owns the name to the Sacher torte!
Cheers to everyone
Susan von
