Hello everybody,
I hope everyone is up and well... Here's a follow up to Duncan's gigantic squid. Voila a gigantic mushroom. I forgot where it was picked and I know nothing about it's fate (Schwammerlsoße mit Semmelködel?) but it has an amazing weight of 20kg. I wouldn't have picked it but rather waited to see how much it would continue to grow... well.
So that's the breaking news of the day. Temperatures have gone up again in Vienna paralyzing all the employees (AC is not very common here. I wish we could just go for a trip to Florida - your place sounds awesome Susan - thank you so much for the offer, but unfortunately after having been away for 3 days we're again buried with work. I have a grant application due on the 31st of July and an exam to prepare for September.
I hope the preparations for the networking party are not too consuming. If you need any help just ask - I'm sure I can free myself for a bit in order to help you Susan.
I also hope that Duncan and his family are ok - I saw those pics of the terrible flooding that's happening. I hope that they at least get drinkable water back soon. I don't know if this is published in the states too but the weather in Europe seems to have gone completely crazy. People die of heat, others drown in water, temperatures drop more than 20°C over night, lots and lots of strong wind and in Italy bad fires burnt down everything until they reach the sea.
Well I wish you all a good day with no wheather or other catastrophes adn I'm lookign frward to reading you soon.
All my best
Barbara

Hey Barbara:
I love this post, it looks like a giant "fungi" to beat all fungis - not sure how to say mushroom in Deutsch!
Hope you had a great Birthday, how was Carinthia, Haider country? Is Meran close to Klagenfurt? I always wanted to go there.
Sorry about the hot weather in Wien, it seems strange to have such hot weather there, that is why I dont go there in the Summer. I saw on BBC News that Hungary is also having terribe hot weather, didnt know about Italy. This global warming is really true, glad that I dont have a car in DC but will buy a Smart Car for Florida. I love them. You and Idriss should come on over to my place in Florida in Aug or Sep if you can. When it gets too hot outside, one can just jump into our own pool or the Gulf of Mexico! The only thing to worry about are the lizards, but they arent too big.
Hope you all have a great rest of the day and dont work so hard.
All the best to both of you,
susan von
Dear Barbara
Many thanks for the giant mushroom. Splendid! When I was in Prague recently I was fortunate enough to be shown the smallest cactus in the world. From Venezuela it is the size of a pin head, when fully grown. Needless to say, a photograph of it would not do it justice!
Thank you very much for your thoughts regarding the recent weather here in England. Thankfully (for us, anyway) the latest floods were in the south of England. The big question remains: is this a "once-in-a-century" event or will it be a regular weather event thanks to Global Warming? We will know the answer this time next year!
With best wishes to you and Idriss
Duncan
Hi everybody,
To say mushroom in German you'd say Pilz or Schwammerl depending on the size and the looks of it. A Pilz is definitely more noble than a Schwammerl but in a sauce with some Knödel mmmmhm delicious...
I'm glad you and your family are not affected by the floods, still I believe from all those incidents I'm inclined to say this is not a once in a lifetime event but rather a phenomenon that is here to stay and we'd be very lucky if it doesn't worsen.
I completely agree with you Susan: Idriss and I should come over one day and visit you in Florida. yet our schedules are so busy we don't even manage to stay home on the weekends.... Especially Idriss is very taken at work, all the grants he has to take care of in his "free-time" and of course the regular scientists job of a minimum of 80 hours a week. I'm already dreaming of vacation. Yet it is interesting and well I'm hoping that one day all of that will help people.
This week I'll start trial runs with my new Blood-Brain Barrier model - I'm very excited.
Oh by the way susan... can you comment on Arnold Schwarzeneggers birthday: Are the Americans also celebrating his birthday. Here the media went nuts reporting about him... some say he's going to go for president... unlikely given that the elections are coming very soon for american standards (just my opinion, but maybe you know mroe about it).
Alright gotta get back to work...
Have a great day you all and maybe we can see each other soon (summer stage is really nice if you (Duncan)and Rosie want to join us ther).

Gross Gott Gdagine Frau Barbara and Everyone Else:
Thanks for the info on fungi in German. I will order a fungi pizza next time I am in Wien and wait to see what I get!
Didnt know about the Governator's birthday. I saw him on national TV on Friday but he was on some riduclous US show about giving out award to stunt people! He looked great. Didnt know it was his birthday. I wish him the best 'cause he is the best thing the US could have for a Presdient.
Unfortunatley, he cant run 'cause there is some riduclous US Amendment in the Constitution that says the Prez has to be native born, ie, born in the US. I dont think this Amendment can be amended/changed in time for the US election cycle, which has already started. Why the US Congress cant even get a budget passed!
I thought the Austrians were mad at the Governator due to his stand on Capital Punishment here in CA and the fact that he sent his ring back to Graz and they took his name off the stadium?
Anyway, I love him and wish he could be President.
Arnie for ever!

Actually the Austrians changed their mind about being mad at him and I think Arnie got his ring adn the stadium name back. There also is a musem and an Arnold Schwarzenegger hiking trail, the entire village celebrated his 60th birthday and invited people from all over the place whose birthday coincided with Arnie's to celebrate with them... They had the original apple Strudel made according to Arnie's mother's recipe etc. so a very authentic birthday party just without the main guest ....
I'm sure he'd have good chances to win an election if he was allowed to. For now California solely enjoys the pleasure of a governator and I'm quite fond of his environmentally friendly Hummer...
All my best
Barbara
Hi Barbara,
Yes, I read about the Governator's Hummer - he has 3, I believe - one now runs on vetegable oil!
Wow!
Is Arnie the best!
We love him, Arnie for President!
You should come to my place in Florida, our neighbors have 3 Hummers for the Hurricanes there and it takes a ladder just to get up into the thing!
All the best
Susan von
